Using drag-and-drop to build an email
Browsing modules
Once you've started a new email, you'll find yourself in the Visual Editor with a list of modules on the left hand side of your screen. Each of these modules is a custom block of content from your Design Library that you can drag and drop into your email to add new elements and content. You can use the search input at the top of the modules pane to find content more quickly.
Note: Only snippets modules are available for drag-and-drop editing. Global modules (partials) can only be included in your email or template through the code editor as these elements are "locked" and restricted from editing in the visual editor.

Inserting modules via drag-and-drop
Once you've found a module you want to insert into your email, simply:
- Select and drag the module over the area in the email pane where you want to insert it
- You will see a thin blue line and Drop here label, indicating the location where your content will be inserted
- Once you've chosen the desired location, release your mouse to drop the content
- The content will be inserted and appear in your email in the dropped location
Not happy with your change? Use the Ctrl/Cmd+z keyboard shortcut or the Undo button to undo.
Frequently asked questions
Why are some modules from my Design Library not available?
NOTE: Only snippets modules are available for drag-and-drop editing. Global modules (partials) can only be included in your email or template through the code editor as these elements are "locked" and restricted from editing in the visual editor.
To create a safe and intuitive editing experience, Litmus automatically validates your Design Library modules for compatibility with the Visual Editor and excludes content that can't be dragged and dropped into an email, including:
- modules containing invalid or incomplete HTML
- modules containing no visible content
Why can't I drop content in certain locations?
In order to ensure every email you build renders beautifully across email clients, Visual Editor automatically identifies all the valid locations in your email where a module can be inserted. You will know you can drop your content when you see the blue Drop here indicator.
